KATHMANDU, Aug 7: A devastating accident occurred at the Nepal-India Jamunaha border crossing in Nepalgunj, resulting in the loss of six lives. The incident occurred when a vehicle, (UP 47 W 1217), carrying Nepali citizens from Balrampur, India, was speeding to reach the border before it closed at 10 PM.

Nandalal Vaishya, the former president of Nepalgunj Chamber of Commerce and Industry, who went to collect the bodies, stated that the accident took place around 10:00 PM when the vehicle collided with a cow on the road. The tragedy unfolded as the vehicle was rushing to reach Rupaidiha in India after the border closed.

According to Vaishya, vehicles coming from different Indian cities to Nepalgunj often drive at high speeds before 10 PM to ensure they cross the border at Jamunaha. This rush is fueled by the fear of being stranded in Rupaidiha, where many people fall victim to robbery.

The accident claimed the lives of 35-year-old Vaibhav Gupta, his 32-year-old wife Deepika Gupta, their three-year-old son Dallu Gupta, six-month-old daughter Shriya Gupta, and Santosh Gupta, the owner of S Kumar Watch Company at Tribhuvan Chowk. Tragically, Santosh's 22-year-old son Nilans Gupta and 20-year-old daughter Suniti Gupta also lost their lives.

Nilans and Suniti were on their way to Balrampur to visit their maternal uncle and Vaibhav to pick up Deepika, who was staying at her maternal home. The loss of four members from the same family has left the people of Nepalgunj devastated.

The bodies of the victims were brought back to Nepalgunj and cremated at Samsanghat on Sunday, with thousands of locals attending the cremation to pay their last respect.
