Ram Lal Shrestha came to Kathmandu from his hometown of Palung, Makawanpur, in search of work in 2029 BS. Before coming here, he used to help his uncle on the farm.

Ram Lal Shrestha came to Kathmandu from his hometown of Palung, Makawanpur, in search of work in 2029 BS. Before coming here, he used to help his uncle on the farm.


In Kathmandu, he started to work as a mason. Initially, he would give his earnings to his uncle. He fell in love with Durga Tandukar and married her in 2033 BS. "The marriage changed my life. I was 27 and she was 22," he said. "She used to work in a biscuit factory and we fell for each other. We got married at Guheswari Temple in the presence of my uncle.After marriage, I learned to save money which changed my life forever."

Since then, he started to make envelopes and paper bags, which he does to date. Both of them worked together and with their savings they built a house at Bhimsensthan in 2042 BS. The 68-year-old shared: "You have to work, which gives meaning to your life. Today's generation does not value work, they do not understand the value of the money they spend. They are just focused on having good food, and clothes and other luxuries."
