KATHMANDU, Nov 9: The South Korean government is allowing job placement for eligible Nepali workers from November 24.
South Korea is one of the most lucrative destinations for Nepali migrant workers. Citing the spread of the coronavirus, the South Korean government since February 2020 has stopped accepting Nepali workers for employment. Due to this reason, more than 6,700 individuals who have cleared the Test of Proficiency in Korean, a mandatory Korean language test, and the skill test, have been unable to go to Korea for job placement.
An official at the Department of Foreign Employment (DoFE) said the Korean government is resuming the job placement after one year. According to the Department, a total of 50 job aspirants will be given permits in each lot to go to Korea.
Labor migration to Korea highest in nine years
After receiving a positive response from the Korean government, the DoFE last month invited 119 Nepali workers who have been waiting for their turn to complete the official procedures. The Department had asked individuals who were permitted for job placement as ‘committed workers’ to fill up CCVI forms within the prescribed date.
According to the DoFE officials, many small and medium sized industries including the agriculture businesses in Korea rely largely on foreign workers. Amid growing complaints from these firms that they faced a shortage of manpower, the Korean government is said to have taken a new decision to allow foreign workers.
Apart from Nepal, the authorities of South Korea are lifting the restriction on migrant workers from countries like Cambodia, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Bangladesh and Indonesia, among others, from the last week of November.
