Speaker intensifies meetings as deadline for no-confidence motion draws near

KATHMANDU, July 20: Speaker Onsari Gharti, who has been drawn into controversy for prioritizing the no-confidence motion over the financial bills related to the budget, has intensified political meetings.


Speaker Gharti met with Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and CPN (Maoist Center) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Wednesday morning.


According to the Speakers’ Secretariat, Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Speaker Gharti held talks on executing the House business as per the consensus of the political parties.


At the meeting held in Dahal’s residence in Lazimpat, Dahal urged the Speaker to create conducive environment for consensus among the political parties, said Speaker’s press advisor Babin Sharma.  


“The Speaker urged both the leaders to create conducive environment for consensus among the political parties,” Sharma said, “Both the leaders have assured the Speaker that they would do their best to create the environment for consensus among the political parties.”

According to Sharma, in the meeting with both the leaders, the Speaker said she would reschedule the House business as per the consensus among the parties. But if there is no consensus among the parties she would be compelled to move ahead as per the House business  schedule fixed earlier.


In a bid to forge consensus, Gharti held a meeting with the Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Tuesday.


She also held talks with President Bidya Devi Bhandari.


Speaker Gharti briefed the president after visiting her at Sheetal Niwas today. Environment of distrust pervasive among the parties has been created after the CPN (Maoist Center) along with the Nepali Congress registered no-confidence motion against the Prime Minister in the Legislature-Parliament on July 13.


Speaker Gharti has intensified talks with political parties to end the environment of mistrust among the parties. The duo held talks for around one hour.


Talking briefly to media persons after the meeting, the Speaker said that she informed the President about parliament activities.



She said, "I also briefed the President about my initiatives to forge consensus among political parties."


On the occasion, President Bhandari said that unity and consensus was necessary among political parties for the constitution implementation, said Speaker Gharti quoting the President.


Responding to a query of media persons, she said that top leaders of the political parties have given assurance to her that they would forge consensus during her meeting with the top leaders.


Speaker Gharti had met with NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba and CPN (Maoist Center) chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal this morning.


Onsari has intensified political meetings after PM Oli told her not to take any controversial decisions yesterday.
