ITAHARAI, Feb 16: The District Attorney’s Office, Sunsari released Senior Superintendent of Police Saurav Rana on a general date Friday. Rana, who has been accused of rape, will have to present himself before the authorities on the date specified.
Gokul Kumar Niraula, the district attorney, released Rana on general date after concluding that there was no evidence to prove his guilt. Earlier, the district court had remanded Rana into custody for five days and again for eight days.
“No evidence has been found as of now. If any evidence is found within the statute of limitations, the case will be reopened,” Niraula said.

There is a one-year statute of limitations in rape cases.
Meanwhile, the alleged rape victim has filed an application with the district attorney stating that she was not raped by Rana.
Earlier on Feb 2, Rana had surrendered to police in Sunsari after the Ministry of Home Affairs (MoHA) suspended him. A Dharan woman had accused him of sexual misconduct.
Rana had been with the federal police unit in Dharan for the past three years.
Nepal Police headquarters had issued instructions to carry out proper investigations into the case.
The alleged victim had met Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa and Home Secretary Prem Kumar Rai and complained about being sexually abused by Rana in November.
Shortly after he was suspended, SSP Rana had denied the allegations against him.
