Three Sherpa brothers become first Nepalis to set foot on South Pole, Mt Vinson next

KATHMANDU, Jan 3: Three Sherpa brothers -  Mingma Sherpa, Chhang Dawa Sherpa and Lakpa Sherpa - who left for Antarctica in a bid to reach the South Pole and climb the highest point in the continent have become the first three siblings and the first Nepali expedition team to set foot on the South Pole.

KATHMANDU, Jan 3: Three Sherpa brothers -  Mingma Sherpa, Chhang Dawa Sherpa and Lakpa Sherpa - who left for Antarctica in a bid to reach the South Pole and climb the highest point in the continent have become the first three siblings and the first Nepali expedition team to set foot on the South Pole. The three siblings achieved the feat on 2nd January 2022 at 13:00 Chile time (21:45 Nepali time) after spending three weeks in Antarctica. 


The trio still have another challenge to overcome before heading home. They will climb Mount Vinson under their mission ‘the last degree’ to climb all seven points in all seven continents.

The Vinson Massif (4,892M/16,050FT) is the highest peak in the Antarctica Continent and the South Pole, also known as the Geographic South Pole or Terrestrial South Pole, is one of two points where the Earth's axis of rotation intersects its surface.


The three brothers had left for Antarctica on December 13 from Kathmandu with the Nepali national flag which was handed over to the team by Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba. 


The siblings have also scheduled a plan to undertake the North Pole expedition in the spring of 2022. They have decided to finish all the remaining summits by the next one and a half years. The seven highest peaks in each continent include Mt Kilimanjaro in Africa, Mt Elbrus in Europe, Denali in North America, Mt Aconcagua in South America, Vinson Massif in Antarctica, Mt Everest in Asia, and Mt Puncak Jaya in Oceania.
