‘Traffic week’ begins

KATHMANDU, April 12: A ‘traffic week’ has begun in the Kathmandu Valley from today. The weeklong awareness campaign launched on the initiatives of the Traffic Police Circle, Maharajgunj and other subordinate community service centers aims to minimise road accidents in the Valley.

KATHMANDU, April 12: A ‘traffic week’ has begun in the Kathmandu Valley from today. The weeklong awareness campaign launched on the initiatives of the Traffic Police Circle, Maharajgunj and other subordinate community service centers aims to minimise road accidents in the Valley.


Metropolitan Police Office Ranipokhari’s chief Deputy Inspector General of Police, Sailesh Thapa Chhetri termed the commencement of the campaign good steps, which according to him would help reduce road accidents in the Valley.

Metropolitan Traffic Police Division chief senior superintendent of police Basanta Kumar Panta was of the view that there would be a fall in the number of road accidents if passengers, drivers and pedestrians were disciplined. Public awareness is necessary to promote road safety, he asserted. National Federation of Nepal Transport Entrepreneurs general secretary Saroj Sitaula said the federation is committed towards improvement in the overall transport sector of the country.


Under the Circle, a total of 792 accidents happened so far in the current fiscal year which caused the deaths of 26, left 560 injured. Students from 10 colleges and two schools, 21 clubs and several hospitals are participating in the campaign. Vehicles’ check, intervention in road encroachment, footpath management and orientation for drivers, assistant drivers and passengers are part of the campaign.
