KATHMANDU, May 24: The government increased the transport fares from Tuesday, the second time in just a week, citing the recent hike in fuel prices.
The Department of Transport Management (DoTM) in its public notice has stated that the fares of public transport have been increased by 2.1 percent while those of cargo transports in hilly and Terai region have been increased by 2.7 percent and three percent, respectively. The decision has been taken on the basis of the auto pricing system implemented in transport businesses.

Earlier on May 18, the government body had increased the transport fares by up to 5.1 percent. In the new development, Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC) increased the prices of petroleum products including petrol, diesel and kerosene each by Rs 10 per liter on Sunday.
With the latest hike in the prices, petrol now costs Rs 180 per liter and diesel and kerosene Rs 163 per liter. According to the government rule, any increase or decrease in the fuel prices by five percent or more in the scientific fare adjustment system automatically leads to a change in the fares of public vehicles.
