KATHMANDU, July 28: In response to global market demands, Tribhuvan University (TU) has introduced new academic programs. In this context, the university has announced that it will begin offering undergraduate courses in Data Science and Actuarial Science starting from the upcoming academic session.
The School of Mathematics at the Institute of Science and Technology under TU has begun offering these two new courses. According to Program Coordinator Associate Professor Keshab Raj Phulara, these subjects were introduced because they are in high demand globally and offer attractive earning potential.
According to him, the primary goal of actuarial science is to produce experts who can create environmental policies to manage future risks. TU is preparing to introduce data science at the undergraduate level for the first time, which will produce data analysis professionals within Nepal.
Students interested in studying these subjects must have passed Grade 12 or an equivalent examination. For actuarial science, students must have studied mathematics or commercial mathematics as a compulsory subject. They must have passed with at least a C grade, which is equivalent to a 1.8 GPA.
Enrollment drive fails to bring 72,000 children to school
The National Examination Board is preparing to release the Grade 12 results in the first week of August. Targeting these students, the School of Mathematics at TU has called for applications for admission.
According to Phulara, there is a shortage of actuaries in Nepal to prepare timely reports for insurance companies and to generate reports in the NFRS system. All 82 actuaries produced by Tribhuvan University are currently employed and working in countries such as India, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
For the four-year Data Science and Actuarial Science courses, TU has set a fee of Rs 530,000 and a quota of 40 students for each program. Admissions will be granted based on merit from the entrance exam.
Data Science
In the Data Science course, any student who has passed Grade 12 can apply for admission. The Data Science course will play an important role in analyzing data for government and private companies, identifying trends in the stock market, and earning foreign currency.
During admission, out of the 40 seats available, 80 percent, or 32 seats, will be allocated under the open category, and 20 percent, or eight seats, will be allocated under the inclusive category.
Scholarship
The total cost to complete the Data Science course over eight semesters is set at Rs 530,600.
A system is in place where a portion of the fee is paid at the time of admission and the remaining amount is to be paid in installments at the beginning of each semester. The School of Mathematics has announced that one male and one female student with outstanding results will be awarded merit scholarships, and 10 percent of the total enrolled students will receive full scholarships.
