US Embassy commemorates 60th Anniversary of the first American to Summit Mt. Everest

KATHMANDU, May 1: The U.S. Embassy in Nepal held a series of events to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the first American ascent of Mount Everest. The celebrations were held in the Khumbu region of Namche, where U.S. Ambassador to Nepal, Dean R. Thompson, was in attendance.

KATHMANDU, May 1: The U.S. Embassy in Nepal held a series of events to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the first American ascent of Mount Everest. The celebrations were held in the Khumbu region of Namche, where U.S. Ambassador to Nepal, Dean R. Thompson, was in attendance.


Before attending the event, Ambassador Thompson tweeted, "60 yrs ago today, Jim Whittaker became the 1st American to summit Everest. I'll visit Khumbu today and  meet with members of local communities, businesses, the US-Nepal Friendship Expedition team-II, youths, and see the infamous mountain!"

As part of the celebrations, Ambassador Thompson joined the local Sherpa community for a screening of the documentary "PASANG: In the Shadow of Everest." The documentary is about the first Nepali woman to summit Mount Everest and was produced by the Pasang Lhamu Mountaineering Foundation (PLMF).


Following the screening, Ambassador Thompson participated in a roundtable discussion with local community members, business leaders, and trekking operators. The discussion focused on the impacts of climate change on the communities and businesses in the region. The participants discussed the importance of sustainable tourism and taking measures to mitigate the negative effects of climate change.


The US Ambassador to Nepal, Dean R. Thompson, took to his Twitter account to express his gratitude for being in the Khumbu region on the 60th anniversary of the first American ascent of Mount Everest. He tweeted, "I can’t believe how lucky I am to be here in Khumbu on this day. Members of the US-Nepal Expedition Team-II and adventure tour operators joined me to discuss the status of tourism in Khumbu and hand over the friendship flag.”
