KATHMANDU, March 11: CPN-UML has nominated Ashta Lakshmi Shakya as the vice-presidential candidate. Deputy Secretary General Pradeep Gyawali said that the secretariat meeting of the party held on Saturday decided to make Shakya a candidate.

Gyawali said that the fact that one of the presidents and vice-presidents should be a woman should not be overlooked, considering the fact that one of the presidents and vice presidents, chiefs and deputy chiefs has been promoted from rural municipalities and municipalities. He said that it is against the constitution to appoint men to both positions.

He said, "This meeting was focused on only one agenda. We have decided to nominate Ashta Lakshmi Shakya, the vice president of the party, for the vice president to be held on March 17. We have promoted one woman from the village council, municipality to the chairman/vice chairman, chief/deputy chief. Elevating men to both positions is against the constitution. That cannot be done.”

Today, the Election Commission has given the time for filing nominations for the post of Vice President.
