KATHMANDU, April 30: Main opposition CPN-UML has said that the scheduled date for the local-level elections could be deferred if the three conditions were met by the government.
“The election date could be adjourned for one to two weeks if the government withdrew the constitution amendment bill from the parliament, guaranteed that the Madhesi parties would participate in the local polls and held elections in a single phase before the budget,” reads the decision of the UML Standing Committee meeting.
EC sets conditions for polls in two phases
The government had decided to hold local-level polls in two phases – the second being on June 14 - saying that it would help bring the Mahesi parties on board the elections process, irking the UML.
Earlier, the government had decided to hold the local-level elections in a single phase on May 14.
The government will have to present the budget on June 29 as per the provision of the constitution.
