KATHMANDU, Oct 24: Potters of Bhaktapur are busy making “Pala”, traditional earthen oil lamps, with the Tihar festival round the corner.
It takes around a week on average for the potters to produce the clay pots, the lamps, and other utensils to make the goods ready to be used.

The average income of the potters here during the festive seasons used to be over Rs 50,000 whereas it stands at around Rs 20,000 a month under the present condition of the pandemic.
The price of clay lamps keeps on increasing with the arrival of festivals ranging from Re 1 per piece to Rs 5 per piece.
However, modern electric lights specially imported from China have threatened this inherited business, nevertheless, they are continuously working to preserve the tradition of making earthen lamps.
