US embassy launches “BookTuk"

KATHMANDU, July 29: The US embassy in Nepal launched a new, electric-powered mobile library "BookTuk" at Padma Kanya Higher Secondary School in Dillibazar.


US Ambassador to Nepal Alaina B Teplitz and coordinator for the Bureau of International Information Programs (IIP) at the Department of State Macon Phillips on Friday inaugurated the BookTuk at the launch ceremony.

The BookTuk is a refurbished Safa Tempo electric vehicle that also features solar-powered wireless internet.  The BookTuk can reach inner city locations in the Kathmandu Valley due to its small size, according to the embassy.“


"I am excited to introduce BookTuk as our new addition to the range of American Spaces in Nepal," said coordinator Macon Phillips“  "Taking the small, but meaningful step to lower the damage on environment is what each of us can do and BookTuk is our small step in that direction," said Ambassador Teplitz.


The US embassy will also donate books to young readers in both English and Nepali through this project, according to the embassy.  The BookBus and BookTuk projects are part of the US embassy-sponsored network of American Spaces across Nepal.


Meanwhile, the US embassy on Thursday opened a new makerspace at the embassy-supported Innovation Hub located inside the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry building in Teku. ''A 'makerspace' is a place that supports hands-on learning in an informal, creativity-focused environment where people gather to share resources and knowledge“
