KATHMANDU, Sept 26: In the first two months of the current Fiscal Year (FY) 2023/24, Nepal has seen a notable influx of electric vehicles (EVs). In this period, a total of 898 four-wheeled EVs were imported, featuring various capacities.
According to the Department of Customs (DoC), 255 electric cars, jeeps, and vans with a capacity of 50 kilowatts were imported, amounting to a total value of Rs 496 million. Similarly, 651 electric vehicles, electric cars, jeeps, and vans with a capacity of 51 kW to 100 kW were imported, with a total import value of Rs 1.88 billion.
Electric cars, jeeps and vans with a capacity of 101 KW to 201 KW were also imported, with an import value of Rs 20.28 million, according to the DoC.

During the first two months of the current year, 1,494 three-wheeled electric vehicles were imported. The import of those three-wheelers has been worth Rs 145.4 million. According to the Department of Customs, in the year 2022/23, 4,050 electric vehicles worth Rs 12 billion were imported.
According to the Department of Customs, 1,807 four-wheeled electric vehicles were imported in the previous year. Compared to the previous year, 2,243 more four-wheeled electric vehicles were imported in the last year.
The data from the Department of Customs for the past two years also shows that the general public's attraction towards electric vehicles has been rising rapidly in Nepal.
A total of 1,877 four-wheeled electric vehicles were imported in the year 2021/22, but that number has more than doubled in the fiscal year 2022/23. The data of the department shows, 4,500 four-wheeled electric vehicles of various models were imported into Nepal in the year 2022/23. Compared to the previous year, the craze for electric vehicles has increased by more than 60 percent in the last year.
