Malayalam actor-director Pratap Pothen breathed his last on Friday (July 15). He was 70. According to the reports, Pratap Pothen was found dead in his apartment in Chennai.
Pratap Pothen has acted in over 100 films in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi film industries. Apart from being an actor, Pratap Pothen was also widely known among the audience as a scriptwriter, director, and producer.
Pratap Pothen made his acting debut with the film ‘Aaravam’ which was directed by the late veteran director Bharathan and was released in the year 1978 and also had the actors Nedumudi Venu, Bahadur, KPAC Lalitha, and Janardhanan in significant roles.

Pratap Pothen has also bagged several awards for the films ‘Thakara’, ‘Chamaram’, ‘Meendum Oru Kaathal Kathai’, ‘Rithubhedam’, and ‘22 Female Kottayam’. He has also directed the superhit films ‘Rithubhedam’, ‘Daisy’, ‘Oru Yathramozhi’, and he Telugu film ‘Chaitanya’.
In Tamil film industry, Pratap Pothen has played significant roles in the films ‘Jeeva’, ‘Vettri Vizhaa’, ‘Seevalaperi Pandi’, and ‘Lucky Man’.
Most prominent Malayalam films of Pratap Pothen are ‘Chamaram’, ‘Thakara’, ‘Pappu’, ‘Idavela’, ‘Kaikeyi’, ‘Aksharangal’, ‘Onnu Muthal Poojyam Vare’, and ‘Thanmathra’ and several other iconic Malayalam movies.
Meanwhile, Pratap Pothen’s previous outing in the Malayalam film industry was with the Mammootty starrer investigation thriller ‘CBI 5: The Brain’ where he played a prominent role in the climax portions. The film was directed by K Madhu under the script penned down by SN Swamy. The film was the fifth and tentatively final installment of the superhit CBI series.
