CHITWAN, Feb 23: A four-bed bone marrow transplant unit is to be constructed at BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital. The unit is going to be built with the financial support of the Chinese government.
According to Shivaji Paudel, executive director of the hospital, the land has been surveyed for the construction of the unit. He said, “We have sent the draft to the Chinese government upon completing the survey, the project will now proceed.” The unit is going to be constructed at a cost of Rs 110 million.

He said that the issue has been discussed with Chinese technicians. This work is intended to prevent patients who have to undergo bone marrow transplant due to tumor disease (cancer) from going abroad. He said that 10-12 people from Nepal go to India every month for bone marrow transplantation.
He said that after the unit is operational, the compulsion to go abroad will come to an end. The hospital is planning to complete the work within two years of starting the construction and start the service.
Executive Director Paudel said that the work has progressed with the help of the Chinese government in the construction of buildings, providing all necessary equipment and skilled technicians, and training local technicians.
