KATHMANDU, June 9: Nepali Congress (NC) President Sher Bahadur Deuba has said that the party's 14th general convention will be held within the scheduled date.
The NC has already announced it will hold the party's 14th general convention from August 23 to 26 in Kathmandu. However, the distribution of the party's active membership is yet to complete due to the prohibitory orders enforced by the local administration to contain further spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
NC to begin village/municipal convention from Saturday
Deuba's statement to hold the general convention within the stipulated date comes amid concerns raised by the rival faction within the party that he is still planning to extend his term as president by deferring the general convention. Deuba, in a statement on Wednesday, clarified that he is committed to holding the general convention within the stipulated date in an apparent bid to allay their concerns.
NC must hold its general convention within mid-August in order to save the party from a statutory crisis. Deuba has already extended one and a half years term after completing his normal four-year tenure as the party’s president. The six-month term extended earlier is expiring in mid-August.
Earlier, rival faction leaders including Ram Chandra Paudel had drawn attention of President Deuba to hold the general convention within the stipulated date even as the country is reeling under the COVID-19 crisis. They have maintained that it is possible to hold the general convention by following safety protocols.
