Devi Chaudhary sets new national record in weightlifting

KATHMANDU, June 20: Nepal Police Club's Devi Chaudhary set new national record in snatch section of the women's 53kg event during the Fifth Grand Prix Weightlifting Tournament being held at Satdobato in Lalitpur.




The 12th South Asian Games silver medalist Devi bettered her own previous record by lifting 59kg weight. Earlier, she had lifted 58kg during the First Open Weightlifting Championship held in Birgunj nearly four years ago.




Devi, who bagged gold medal in the section, lifted altogether 130kg, including 71kg in clean and jerk section.

Similarly, Sanju Chaudhary of Banke finished second by lifting 98kg. Sanju lifted 46kg in snatch and 52kg in clean and jerk.




Likewise, Rita Gurung of Tribhuvan Army Club, who lifted 90kg with 40kg in snatch and 50kg in clean and jerk, finished third.




In 48kg event, Manisha Ranabhat of Army claimed gold medal by lifting altogether 111kg. Manisha lifted 50kg in snatch and 61kg in clean and jerk.




Sangita Rai of Police won silver medal by lifting 100kg with 47kg in snatch and 53kg in clean and jerk, while Uma Chaudhary of Banke settled for a bronze medal by lifting 85kg that included 40kg in snatch and 45kg in clean and jerk.




Meanwhile, in men's 52kg, Ram Kumar Yadav of Saptari claimed gold. Ram lifted 60kg in snatch and 75kg in clean and jerk to lift altogether 135kg. Ganesh Ranabhat of Lalitpur finished second as he lifted 113kg with 53kg in snatch and 60kg in clean and jerk.


Ramesh Pathak came third with 109kg (50kg in snatch and 59kg in clean and jerk).




Likewise, Tularam Mahato of Army clinched gold in 56kg event with altogether 170kg that included 75kg in snatch and 95kg in clean and jerk. Ashok Kumar Shah of Bara lifted 113kg (53kg in snatch and 60kg in clean jerk) to finish second and Birendra Gurung of Lalitpur lifted 110kg, including 50kg in snatch and 60kg in clean and jerk, to become third in the section.
