District Court permits police to keep ex-secretary Upadhyay in custody for three more days

KATHMANDU, April 23: The District Court, Kathmandu, on Thursday allowed the police to keep former secretary Bhim Upadhyay in custody for three more days.


The Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police On Wednesday arrested Upadhyay on the charge of spreading false information through social media. He was presented before the District Court, Kathmandu, on Thursday.

Upadhyay's arrest comes two weeks after he accused the incumbent health secretary Yadav Koirala of indulging into corruption in the purchase of medical equipment. Upadhyay and Koirala had exchanged heated jabs on Twitter on the issue of anomalies in the purchase of medical equipment. Both of them had accused each other of receiving bribe.


According to the Cyber Bureau, Upadhyay has been arrested for cybercrime. "A probe has been launched against him in accordance with the Electronic Transaction Act, 2063," said SSP Nabinda Aryal of the Cyber Bureau.


The bureau will soon begin in-depth investigation against the former secretary, Aryal added.
