KATHMANDU, Jan 28: The Election Commission (EC) has invited both factions of the ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) for holding discussions on the preparations for the upcoming midterm elections.

According to EC Spokesperson Raj Kumar Shrestha, the EC has invited the K P Oli-led faction and Pushpa Kamal Dahal-led faction of the NCP at 11 am Friday. The meeting is aimed at apprising them of the preparations made so far by the EC about the midterm polls scheduled for April 30 and May 10. “Discussions on the election process will also be held with them,” he said.

Shrestha, however, said that the meeting will not dwell on the disputes between the two factions. “The meeting will strictly focus on the preparations for the election. The discussion about the split of the party is not in the agenda for now,” he said.

Earlier, the EC had rejected the changes made by both factions of the NCP in the party committees. While the Dahal faction had stripped Oli of the party’s chairman and even stripped him of the party’s general membership, the Oli faction had inducted several hundred members in its central committee and inducted leaders in various other committees of the party.
