KATHMANDU, Nov 22: The government has formed a committee to inspect Nepal’s borders with India and China, following the controversy in the country after India released a new political map which shows a piece of Nepali land in Kalapani inside the Indian territory.

The decision of the government comes amid mounting pressure from various quarters to start fresh negotiations with India through diplomatic channels to resolve the issue of border disputes once and for all.

Government Spokesperson Gokul Baskota informed the press on Thursday that the Cabinet meeting last week decided to form an inspection team to observe the country’s borders with both India and China.

Prime Minister KP Oli had asked India to recall its army from Kalapani, while addressing a public function in Kathmandu earlier this week. Last week, the parliamentary State Affairs Committee directed the government to initiate fresh diplomatic initiatives to resolve the issue of Kalapani and other territories encroached upon by India. The committee had also directed the government to issue a fresh political map of Nepal that includes Kalapani, Lipu Lekh and Limpiyadhura.

Surrounded by India on the eastern, southern and western sides, Nepal shares an open border with the neighboring country. Official records show that Nepal has border disputes with India at 71 places in 23 different districts.
