KATHMANDU, Aug 18: The government has decided to provide 1 million each to the families of those killed during the Madhesi movement.  A Cabinet meeting held in Singha Durbar on Thursday decided to this effect.

As many as 52 people including 10 security personnel were killed in the Madhes movement.

The United Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF), an alliance of Tarai-centric political parties that is  unhappy with the constitution, has been demanding that the government provide Rs 1 million each declaring those killed in the Madhes Movement as  martyrs.

The Nepali Congress-CPN (Maoist Center) ruling alliance took this decision at a meeting today in line with the three-point deal reached with the UDMF before the prime ministerial election.

However, the government has not declared those killed during the Madhes movement as martyrs yet.

Similarly, the government has formed an investigation commission under the leadership of former Chief Justice Girish Chandra Lal to prepare a report on the incidents occurred in the Madhes Movement.

The other members of the commission will be appointed by the Home Ministry in the coordination of the Prime Minister.

With this decision, almost all the demands raised by the UDMF have been fulfilled except the constitution amendment.

Likewise, the government has decided to bear the expenses of Rs 9.106 million incurred for the treatment of those injured in the Taliban attack in Afghanistan.
