KATHMANDU, Oct 10: Local people of Hadigaun have celebrated the Narayan Jatra, an age-old tradition to pay homage to Lord Bishnu. Mayor Balendra Shah and Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol of Kathmandu Metropolitan City also observed the jatra on Monday.

There is also a popular saying regarding the jatra, “kahi nabhako jatra hadigaun maa” (there are no processions like the ones in Handigaun).

Unlike the chariots in any other jatras, this jatra has three chariots without the wheels. The devotees carry the chariots on their shoulders. The chariots take the shape of an inverted umbrella on the top, consist of idols of various gods on the top and have the pinnacle at the bottom.

Each khat is rotated in a clockwise direction by a man sitting at its base while the chariots make a round of Hadigaun. The jatra is believed to invite protection and prosperity to the local inhabitants.
