KATHMANDU, July 24: Supporters of Dr. Govinda KC staged protest against the government’s delay to save his life and fulfill his demands. Dr. KC has been on his 15th hunger strike for the past 25 days, the longest so far. The Today, Nepali Congress's district committees staged protests against the government at Kathmandu, Bhaktapur and Lalitpur.
Yesterday, Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli vented his ire at the doctor and challenged his practice to meet demands. He also said that the government was willing to reach an agreement, but only when he was able to take independent decisions. PM Oli had also accused the opposition, Nepali Congress of politicizing the event and disrupting parliamentary proceedings.
Protests in districts as govt moves to split Province 5
Today, to reach a conclusion with the ongoing protest of Dr. Govinda KC, Kedar Bhakta Mathema, and Dharma Kanta Baskota, chairperson of Nepal Medical Council have reached Baluwatar. Mathema is the coordinator of the Mathema working committee that drafted a report on medical education, which KC has backed. The meeting is being attended by senior leaders of Nepal Communist Party as well.
Across the country, supporters of Dr. KC have been pressuring the government to back down and table the original medical education ordinance. At Basantapur, supporters have been staging mass resilience by relay hunger strikes.
