KATHMANDU, Jan 26: The main opposition Nepali Congress (NC) has announced to stage fresh protest programs against Prime Minister KP Oli’s move to dissolve the House of Representatives (HoR).
A Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting of the party held in Sanepa made a decision to stage mass protests across the country on February 1, February 6 and February 12. The decision was made after a consensus was reached between President Sher Bahadur Deuba and rival faction leader Ram Chandra Paudel.
Federal Alliance announces protests to disrupt polls
While the party’s sister organizations will hold the protest programs against the dissolution of the HoR on February 1, various well-wisher organizations of the party have been entrusted with the responsibility of staging a protest against the parliament dissolution on February 6. The party’s district committees will stage protests in their respective district headquarters across the country against the parliament dissolution on February 16.
NC’s decision to stage a fresh round of protest against parliament dissolution comes in the wake of President Deuba facing allegations from various quarters that he was adopting a soft stance against Prime Minister Oli’s ‘unconstitutional’ move to dissolve parliament. Although the party has already termed the government’s move ‘unconstitutional’, the differences between Deuba and Paudel whether they should expedite the movement before the apex court’s verdict on the case has made the NC unable to come up with any concrete protest programs.
Rival faction leader Paudel insists that they should immediately launch street protests. However, Deuba has maintained that it is in the interest of the party to wait until the apex court gives its verdict on the house dissolution case.
