KATHMANDU, Aug 2: Senior leaders of ruling Nepal Communist Party (NCP) have requested the party’s spokesperson Narayan Kaji Shrestha to take back his decision to resign from the post.

Shrestha, who argued that the demands raised by Dr Govinda KC were of political nature and needed to be settled through negotiations at a time when the top leaders of the party dismissed his demands outright, had tendered his resignation a few days before Dr KC ended his 27-day long hunger strike on July 26.

Shrestha had tendered his resignation after NCP chairmen duo KP Oli and Pushpa Kamal Dahal publicly objected to Shrestha’s meetings with Dr KC’s representatives. Shrestha has since then not attended any meeting of the party’s office bearers including the Secretariat Meeting.

Sources said top NCP leaders have entrusted Madhav Kumar Nepal to persuade Shrestha to withdraw his resignation. “Minor disputes within the party are normal, but they should not be a reason to resign,” a source quoted leader Nepal as telling Shrestha during this meeting on Tuesday.

After the NCP chairmen duo asked Shrestha if it was appropriate for a party spokesman to make such remarks on the social media, Shrestha had immediately submitted his resignation to the duo.

After the government reached a nine-point agreement with Dr KC on July 26, Shrestha, in a tweet had thanked all including those standing against his suggestion to resolve Dr KC’s demands through negotiations.

Top NCP leaders had also objected to Shrestha’s tweet in connection with the then law minister Sher Bahadur Tamang after Tamang made controversial remarks about Nepali female students in Bangladesh. Shrestha had drawn the attention of the government toward Tamang’s remark.
