Nepal reports 899 new cases; below 1,000 cases a day in a month

KATHMANDU, Dec 12: Nepal confirmed 899 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday taking the total national tally to 247,593. 


The country, which had been witnessing more than 1,000 new cases a day, reported a sharp fall in the number of new infections of late owing to very few number of PCR tests to diagnose the disease. Earlier, the country reported 502 cases on November 17. Before that the number of cases below the 1000-mark was reported on October 27, the day when the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) confirmed 570 cases.

The country registered the highest single-day spike of the flu-like infection on October 21 (5,743 cases). 


As the government announced that it would not bear the cost of COVID-19 tests and treatment, except for those who fall under the designated groups, the number of COVID-19 tests has seen a constant decline. More than 70 COVID-19 labs across the country carried out only 5,242, four times less than it used to be some months ago. Nepal has so far conducted 1,825,860 PCR tests to confirm the viral infection.


According to the MoHP, Nepal’s recovery rate for the disease stands at 94.6 percent including 1,359 more COVID-19 patients who gained recovery on Saturday. As many as 1,689 people, however, have been claimed by the pandemic in the country since the first tragedy occurred on May 16. Nepal on Saturday confirmed 15 more deaths.


Meanwhile, the Kathmandu Valley added 482 new cases of the disease on Saturday.
