PM Dahal and Chairman Oli discuss Bhutanese refugees scam

KATHMANDU, May 6: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal and CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli held a meeting on Saturday regarding the fraud of sending Nepali citizens to the United States by turning them into Bhutanese refugees.


Speaking with the media, Prime Minister Dahal said that UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli had discussed this issue in the meeting held at Singh Durbar. “Chairman Oli is concerned over the scam of sending Nepali nationals to the USA in the guise of Bhutanese refugees. We discussed the same issue today. I briefed him the general thing,” said Dahal

According to the accused who were arrested for being involved in this case, preparations were underway to amend the file on the list of Bhutanese refugees at the Ministry of Home Affairs and include the names of Nepali citizens and send them to America.


The arrest warrants have been issued against Pratik Thapa, son of Maoist strongman and former Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa, another former Maoist leader Top Bahadur Rayamajhi and his son Sandeep Rayamajhi on charge of fraudulent activities. Similarly, Tek Narayan Pandey, secretary at the Office of the Vice President and former lawmaker Indrajit Rai has also been arrested for being involved in the same case.


On Thursday, the day after the arrest warrant was issued against Rayamajhi, UML Chairman Oli met Prime Minister Dahal. During that time, he repeatedly responded that people who have become ministers and MPs should not be arrested in such a way.


Speaking with the media, PM Dahal assured that the investigation into the case of fake Bhutanese refugees will not stop. “The investigation will not stop. It will move forward with determination according to the procedure and prevailing law.” He mentioned that the investigation will move forward from the belief that no one should be freed from guilt.
