Kapilvastu, July 5: Nishar Ahmed Khan of Rastriya Janata Party Nepal (RJPN) was spearheading anti-poll campaigns in Kapilvastu until the eve of candidacy nomination for the second phase of the local elections. Since his party had decided to boycott the polls, he was mentally prepared, albeit heavy heartedly, to boycott the elections.
But Khan changed his mind in the eleventh hour on June 16, the date set for candidacy registration, after fellow villagers and party sympathizers pressed him to contest in the elections.

“I did the right thing by listening to the people. I am grateful to all those people who changed my mind and elected me,” said Khan, who was elected the chairperson of Suddhodhan Rural Municipality on Wednesday.
Khan, who fielded candidacy as independent candidate, was elected with 1837 votes with a small margin of 134 votes. Khan, who was initially seen as a weak candidate, said that he has no regrets for disobeying the party decision.
“Winning elections as an independent candidate is a big thing. This is a historic victory. This has given me encouragement to work for the development of this village,” said Khan.
Khan said that he will also continue to struggle for the rights and equality of his people.
