Singh, Shrestha set new nat’l records

KATHMANDU, Aug 18: Olympian Gaurika Singh set two new national records in women’s 100m butterfly and 50m freestyle events on the second day of the 20th National Swimming Championship on Friday.

KATHMANDU, Aug 18: Olympian Gaurika Singh set two new national records in women’s 100m butterfly and 50m freestyle events on the second day of the 20th National Swimming Championship on Friday.


In the championship being organized by Nepal Swimming Association at the International Sports Complex, Satdobato, Tribhuvan Army Club’s Singh broke her own record in butterfly event and Sofia Shah’s 50m freestyle event recorded in the 12th South Asian Games last year.

Singh completed the 100m distance in one minute 7.69 seconds to better her own record of one minute 10.94 seconds and shattered Shah’s earlier national record in 50m distance of 28.85 seconds in 28.50 seconds. Olympian Singh had set national records in two different categories on the first day of the championship on Thursday.


Likewise in the men’s 100m breaststroke event, Armed Police Force (APF)’s Shuvam Shrestha improved his own national record set in the 17th FINA World Championship of one minute 11.34 seconds in one minute 11.24 seconds.  In the same competition, Anubhav Subba of Army claimed four gold medals.


He won gold in the 200m individual medley, 100m freestyle, 100m backstroke and 100m butterfly events.  Singh and Subba bagged gold medals in 100m freestyle events in women’s and men’s categories respectively, but couldn’t break their previous national records. Singh clocked one minute 2.03 seconds while Subba completed the 100m distance in one minute 53 seconds. 


Shuvam Shrestha and Tisha Shakya won gold medals in 100m breaststroke and 50m breaststroke events respectively. Shakya of Central Region clocked the women’s 100m distance in one minute 26.30 seconds and women’s 50m distance in 39.93 seconds. Shuvam, however, clocked the men’s 50m distance in 32.82 seconds.


Likewise, Duana Lama of APF, Sameera Shova Thapa of Western Region and Alexender Shah of Central region bagged a gold medal each in 200m individual medley, 100m backstroke and 50m freestyle events respectively.

Lama clocked the 200m distance in two minutes 54.95 seconds, Thapa completed the 100m distance in one minute 29.96 seconds and Shah in the 26.63 seconds in the 50m distance.
