Amateur Tenzing extends lead after second day

KATHMANDU, Feb 21: Amateur golfer Tenzing Tsering gave continuity to his six-stroke lead after the second round of Surya Nepal Western Open on Tuesday played at the Gokarna Forest Golf Resort in Kathmandu.

KATHMANDU, Feb 21: Amateur golfer Tenzing Tsering gave continuity to his six-stroke lead after the second round of Surya Nepal Western Open on Tuesday played at the Gokarna Forest Golf Resort in Kathmandu.


Tenzing, one of the members of the national team, carded two-under 70 for a total of eight-under 144. Pro golfer Sanjay Lama, who carded even-par 72 on the second day for a total of two-under 142, is behind Tsering. . Rabi Khadka scored one-over 73 for a total of even-par 144 and stands second among pros. 


Nepal number one Shivaram Shrestha stands third after he carded even-par 72 for a total of one-over 145. Bhuwan Nagarkoti played four-over 76 for a total of two-over 146 to sit fourth. Dhana Bahadur Thapa and Deepak Acharya are fifth and sixth with total score of four-over 148 and five-over 149. The duo carded one-over 73 and three-over 75 respectively on the second day. Bal Bhadra Rai carded five-over 75 on the second day for a total of six-over 150.

Tenzing played two-over 34 on the front nine and even-par 36 on the back nine. He started the day with birdie on the first hole and added two more birdies on the fifth and seventh holes but dropped a shot on the par-3 eighth hole. On the back nine, he made birdies on the 11th and 17th holes against bogeys on the 14th and 15th holes.


Sanjay played even-par 36 on both halves. On the front nine, he missed a par on the sixth hole but amended it with birdie on the following hole. On the back nine, he secured birdies on the 11th and 12th holes but bogeys on the 14th and 17th holes.


Rabi faced four bogeys against a lone birdie in the first half for three-over 39. On the later half, he played two birdies and saved shots on other holes for two-under 34. He started with birdie on the first hole but dropped shots on the second, fifth, sixth and seventh holes. On the back nine he made birdies on the 11th and 14th holes. 


Shivaram played even-par 36 on either halves. He dropped a shot on the very first hole and birdied on the following hole. He also saved shots on the fifth and sixth holes but faces bogeys on the seventh and eighth holes. On the later half, he scored a birdie on the 15th hole against a bogey on the 14th hole. 


Altogether 21 professionals and six amateurs made the cut. The pros to make the cut include Rame Thapa, Pashupati Sharma, Yelamber Singh Adhikari, Surya Prasad Sharma, Purna Prasad Sharma, Deepak Magar, Dhruba KC, CB Bhandari, Krishna Man Rajbahak, Pradeep Kumar Lama, Ram Krishna Shrestha, Kumar Kami and Shiva Ram Poudel. Similarly, amateurs Tashi Ghale, Prithivi Malla, Mithun Rai, and Sukra Bahadur Rai also survived the cut applied after half of the play in the fourth event played under Surya Nepal Golf Tour 2016-17.
