KATHMANDU, Sept 29: Police today made public the seizure of smuggled clothes confiscated worth Rs 5.5 million stashed in a tourist bus at Budhanilakantha, Kathmandu on Monday evening.
A team of Metropolitan Police Range seized the illegal garments from a tourist bus (Ba 4 Kha 6939) parked at Bishnumati of Budhanilakantha Municipality-5. Police found out about the smuggled clothes during the inspection of the bus that were left unattained.
Customs-evaded garments seized in Jhapa
The illegal garments comprising 3,704 shirts and other garments packed in 41 sacks were stashed in a secret compartment in the bus's roof and were brought to Kathmandu without paying the due customs duty, informed Metropolitan Police Range's Police Inspector, Bhupendra Giri.
Investigation has ascertained that the bus plying the Delhi-Kathmandu route has been used to ferry smuggled goods from India to Nepal. The bus driver and assistant-driver have been absconding since the seizure.
Police have sent the bus and illegal garments to the Metropolitan Police Circle, Maharajgunj for further action, said Inspector Giri.
