KATHMANDU, Jan 30: Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Prahlad Karki of BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences (BPKIHS) faced an attempted assault on the institute’s premises on Tuesday. Three people who went to the vice-chancellor's office have been arrested by the police for trying to smear soot upon him.
According to Sunsari Police Spokesperson Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Nabin Krishna Bhandari, one of the three persons who were called by Acting Vice-Chancellor Karki to meet him at around 1:00PM tried to attack Karki with mobil (vehicle lubricant) filled in a bottle.

"When one of the three tried to attack him with the Mobil, the police stationed there immediately arrested him. Nothing happened to Karki," Bhandari said. The three individuals in custody are currently under investigation.
The BPKIHS has been in turmoil for some time, primarily due to protests from teachers and employees demanding promotions. Acting Vice-Chancellor Karki has been accused by protestors of obstructing their promotion requests.
Despite the ongoing agitation, OPD (Outpatient Department) services partially resumed on Sunday. Professors and junior resident doctors initiated the partial resumption of OPD services, as they are not eligible for promotion. The ongoing promotion demands mainly come from Assistant Professors, Associate Professors, and Additional Professors.
In addition to the protesting teachers and doctors, nursing and staff members are also participating in the strike. While the Biratnagar High Court has issued a short-term interim order to halt immediate promotions, the institute has temporarily suspended the promotion process. Despite the appeal to return to work, the agitating party continues the disobedience movement.
