UDAYAPUR, Aug 26: Triyuga Municipality in Udayapur district spent 22 years just to find a landfill site to dispose off the garbage produced in the municipality of eastern Nepal.

The municipality was established 22 years ago. The government declared it as a municipality even though it didn't have a dumping site, which is one of the required criteria to become a municipality.

"Now, we have found the site for disposing wastes produced in the municipality," said Tara Nath Luitel, chief administrative officer of the municipality. "The site of around one bihga land is located at the local community forest of ward number 1, Kamaljor," he added.

According to the municipality, about 15 quintals of wastes are daily produced in the municipality. So far, the municipality has been mixing together the disposable and non-disposal wastes and throwing them on the banks of Triyuga River. The volume of waste has increased in the last five years.

Although the municipality has found the landfill site, it lacks access to road. "We need to open a 500-meter track to reach there from Gaighat-Beltar road section. It is about nine kilometers from the municipal center," said the municipal officials. According to them, the site will be sufficient to dump wastes for at least 10 years.

Though the wastes can be recycled and reused by segregating them, the municipality is yet to adopt such policy of utilizing waste.
