KATHMANDU, Feb 21: A team of 10 Nepali mountaineers who left for a summit push at Mt Cho Oyu early today have pulled back from their mission after encountering unfavorable weather conditions on their way up.

Earlier today, Chhang Dawa Sherpa, one of the donors of the expedition, shared that the team had to retreat to a safe spot after facing difficulties on the way up. “The entire team reached 7400m+ this morning. Unfortunately, the team had to descend back to the safe spot and plan further, after struggling to get into the col between Tenzing Peak and Cho Oyu Ridge,” Sherpa wrote on Facebook.

On February 19, Gelje Sherpa, the expedition’s leader, had shared that the team was looking out for a few hours in the morning on February 21 to make a push for the summit as the weather forecast warned of high speed winds above 7,500 meters in the afternoons.

Despite the delay, the team is looking forward to making another push for the summit after finishing preparations. Keeping in mind that the end of the meteorological winter is in sight, the team is looking forward to registering a winter summit, although that is not their primary goal.

The expedition team had left for the Everest region from Kathmandu on January 26 with a goal to introduce a commercial route from the Nepali side.

Similarly, a second expedition team launched by Pioneer Adventures is also looking to reach the summit of Mt Cho Oyu from another route.
