KATHMANDU, Feb 17: The Kathmandu District Court on Sunday said that the verdict on the attempted rape case against former speaker Krishna Bahadur Mahara is likely to be issued on Monday.
A single bench of Judge Ambar Raj Paudel was scheduled to issue the judgment on the case on Sunday after concluding the hearings. “The hearings have been concluded so the verdict will be issued on Monday,” Ananda Prasad Shrestha, registrar at the court, told mediapersons.
On December 20, the Patan High Court (PHC) had directed the lower court to conclude the case within a month upholding his detention in relation to the attempted rape of a female staffer of the Parliament Secretariat, Roshani Shahi.
Mahara to remain in jail until final verdict
A division bench of Chief Judge Nahakul Subedi and Judge Tek Narayan Kunwar denied Mahara bail as rejected by the district court stating that there was no ground for granting him bail but directed the trial court to issue the verdict within a month.
Following the order of the high court, the district court continued the hearings on the case that concluded Sunday by evaluating the evidences. Mahara had moved the high court on November 23, challenging the district court’s November 4 decision to deny him bail.
Claiming that the lower court order had misinterpreted the law and made a wrong evaluation of the evidences, Mahara had moved the high court demanding bail.
Kathmandu District Attorney’s Office had filed the case of attempted rape against Mahara, demanding seven-and-a-half years in jail including five years for rape attempt and two-and-a-half years for misusing his office.
Mahara was arrested on October 6 in response to a complaint filed by Shahi. She later filed a separate petition at the court stating that the police had forced her to file the complaint and claimed that Mahara had not subjected her to any kind of sexual harassment.
