RAUTAHAT, April 30: Family members of a woman in Rautahat have accused her in-laws of murdering their daughter for not bringing a bed in dowry.

Despite bringing a considerable amount as dowry, Nisha Upadhyay, 22, of Rajdevi Municipality-3 was repeatedly tortured for not bringing a bed, according to the family members of the deceased woman. On Saturday, Nisha was found hanging dead in her room. Her brother Dilip Upadhyay claimed that she was hanged by her in-laws to make it look like a suicide.

Nisha had tied the knot with Bibek Tiwari, the son of Birendra Tiwari of Rajdevi municipality, on March 5, 2017. Family members of the bride had offered Rs 800,000, a motorcycle, television, cupboard among others to the groom's family as dowry during the marriage.

Mother of the deceased Parbati Devi has accused Nisha's sister-in-law Soni Tiwari, husband Bibek and father-in-law Birendra of murdering her daughter. She further added that her daughter was repeatedly sent to her parental home by her in-laws to ask for a bed, which they could not provide during the wedding.

The body of the deceased is currently kept at the District Hospital, Gaur. Police are yet to receive her postmortem report. Parents of the victim fear that the in-laws may possibly manipulate the police as well as the hospital authority. They have urged journalists and police to investigate and publicize the truth behind the case.

SP Bhupendra Khatri, chief of the District Police Office (DPO), Rautahat, informed Republica that police are waiting for the postmortem report to confirm whether her death was a murder or a suicide. Police said they are currently investigating the case.
