KATHMANDU, Sept 19: Foreign Minister Pradeep Gyawali is leaving for New York on Saturday, leading a Nepali delegation to the 74th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The foreign minister will be accompanied by his wife Saraswati Gyawali.
The delegation will comprise senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador of Nepal to the US Arjun Kumar Karki, Permanent Representative of Nepal to the UN Amrit Bahadur Rai and other officials from the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the UN in New York.
The general debate of the UNGA will begin on September 24 under the theme of ‘Galvanizing Multilateral Efforts for Poverty Eradication, Quality Education, Climate Action and Inclusion”. The foreign minister will address the UNGA on September 30.

On September 26, Gyawali will chair the informal session of the SAARC Council of Ministers. India and Pakistan, which currently have witnessed a severe chill in relations, have also confirmed their participation in the meeting. On the margins of the UNGA, Gyawali will participate in the Climate Action Summit, UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development and the UN High-level Dialogue on Financing for Development, according to a press statement issued by the foreign minsitry.
In New York, Gyawali will address separate ministerial meetings of the Non-Aligned Movement; G77 and China; Least Developed Countries; and Land-locked Developing Countries. He will represent Nepal at the Ministerial Meeting of the Asian Cooperation Dialogue as well.
The foreign minister will also address the 10th Ministerial Meeting of the UN Group of Friends of Mediation, the High-level Dialogue on Peace Operations, and participate in the High-level Commemorative Event convened by the President of the General Assembly to mark the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
The foreign minister will attend the lunch to be hosted by the UN Secretary-General on September 24 and a reception to be hosted by US President Donald Trump in the evening.
Gyawali will interact with Nepali diaspora in New York on September 26 and in Chicago on September 29. He will be back on October 1.
