Advocate Deepak Raj Joshi and four other people filed a writ petition at the SC on December 28 with the claim that the educational qualification of Adhikari is not sufficient to assume responsibility for the post.

The writ petitioner has claimed that his basic educational qualification is not in accordance with the Nepal Rastra Bank Act, 2058 BS and demanded annulment of his appointment.

The government appointed Adhikari as the governor of the Central Bank on April 6, 2020. According to Section 20 of the Nepal Rastra Bank Act, 2058 BS, the governor should have a master's degree in economics, monetary, banking, finance, commerce, management, public administration, statistics, mathematics or law and need to possess experience in the same field.

In the writ petitions, advocates Deepak Raj Joshi, Pratap Singh Thakurathi, Damodar Timilsana and Chudamani Bhandari have claimed that Adhikari obtained the equivalence of a master's degree from Tribhuvan University but the law stipulates that he must have passed the master's level and not qualified on the basis of equivalence.
