KATHMANDU, Jan 26: Nepali Congress (NC) Spokesperson Dr. Prakasharan Mahat has said that the NC decided to support the government for national consensus.

During a press conference organized by the Nepal Press Union in Banke, Dr Mahat said that the NC had given a vote of confidence to the government at the request of the Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal. “NC will not join the government. The NC’s support is meant to ensure national consensus in the election of key positions such as the Speaker and President,” he said.

Dr. Mahat said that since Prime Minister Dahal had the intention that he would stand up for the defense of the constitution and build an understanding and that he would develop an understanding, NC supported the government to test his commitment.

Dr Mahat stated that safeguarding the constitution is the responsibility of the NC and that when the party had previously sought the position of Prime Minister, it was not with the intention of breaking alliances. He acknowledged that any alliance breakdown was due to mistakes in political evaluations.

Spokesperson Dr Mahat also clarified that NC has a claim on the presidency. He, however, clarified that NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba is not a candidate for the presidency.

Dr Mahat also said that senior party leader Ramchandra Paudel and other leaders are interested in running for the post of president. “The party will take a decision at the appropriate time,” he added.
