Souls of My City: Ho Maya and Kara Bir’s story

“I married at the age of 30. Many approached me for marriage. Some did not have teeth, some were old and some were rough looking men. I first met him in a marriage ceremony. He was carrying the bridegroom’s belongings. Then, he came to my home when I was not around. My parents decided to get me married to him. He was good looking then time but he could not hear properly now,” said Ho Maya Bhujel, 64. She is from Saipu, Pulu. She is the third wife of Kara Bir Bhujel. Kara’s first and second wife had eloped. “I have four daughters with my third wife and I am happy with her,” said Kara, 64. They are both farmers and Ho Maya is also a Shaman. It is their third visit to Kathmandu. They came to Kathmandu for health checkups. It has been more than a week that they have been staying here. They are missing their village which is peaceful and green.
