KATHMANDU, August 21: The Election Commission (EC) has summoned Madhav Kumar Nepal and Mahantha Thakur, who have filed separate applications to register political parties under their respective leadership, for the verification on August 25.
A group led by Madhav Kumar Nepal had earlier filed an application to form CPN-UML (Socialist) party after they decided to sever ties with the UML. The move came shortly after the Sher Bahadur Deuba-led government introduced an ordinance to make it easy for the party to split.

However, the CPN-UML (Socialist) filed another application proposing a new name-- CPN (Unified Socialist)-- on Friday. The EC has summoned the members of the proposed party on August 25 for verification, said Spokesperson at the EC, Raj Kumar Shrestha.
The EC also called the Loktantrik Samajbadi Party Nepal led by Thakur to present before the EC for verification of the signatures of their members on the same day. The EC is expected to deliver its decision on the registration of political parties following the verification of the executive committee members and party lawmakers.
