KATHMANDU, Sept 22: The Kathmandu Valley reported as many as 647 new cases of the COVID-19 infection in the past 24 hours, according to the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP).

Of the three districts in the Valley, Kathmandu alone witnessed 511 new COVID-19 cases while 73 people in Lalitpur and 63 others in Bhaktapur were found to have contracted the virus.


With this, the total number of COVID-19 cases in the capital stands at 17,737 which accounts for 26.6 percent of the total confirmed cases across the country. As of Tuesday, Nepal has reported as many as 66,632 cases, according to the data compiled by the MoHP.


Meanwhile, one more case of fatality was also reported in the Valley as a 50-year-old female  from Kathmandu district succumbed to this disease on Tuesday.


The capital city, which started witnessing a surge in COVID-19 cases following the government’s decision to lift the four-month long nationwide lockdown on July 21, is still reporting more than 500 cases a day on average. Though the district administration offices (DAOs) in the Valley imposed a three-week long prohibitory order starting August 21 in an apparent bid to curb the further spread of this viral disease, the infection rate is still on the rise.


The Valley confirmed more than 600 cases for eight days in a row. The data shows that the daily COVID-19 count in the Valley on September 15 was 676 followed by 737 on September 16. The following day witnessed 618 more cases while the highest single-day surge was reported on the 18th day of this month. The Valley reported 711 on September 19, 767 on September 20 and 674 other cases on September 21.
